The following are rules for all gardeners.
They are designed to make your gardening experience enjoyable and productive.
Remember you are gardening alongside others. Good garden etiquette is necessary.
PLOTS:
* Work within your assigned plot. Please do not enter the plots of other gardeners without their permission.
* Make your access path within your own garden area.
*Place stones in the container at the end of your plot – not on the grass.
* If you are unable to continue gardening or maintaining your plot, please inform the Garden Guardians.
* If the assigned plot has not been planted or weeded by July 1 without notice or explanation from the gardener, the plot will be reassigned.
*Remove stakes, wires, and non-compostable items by November 30th
* At the end of the season plant material can be left on the plot. This helps to catch blowing leaves which add organic matter when tilled into the soil in spring. Parsnips may be left overwinter.
GARDEN PLANTS:
* Plant seeds or transplants at least 12” from your plot boundary depending on the mature size of the plants.
* Plant large-sized or vining plants in the middle of your plot to prevent them from shading or intruding into neighbouring gardens. Please do not grow giant sunflowers. Please be respectful and remember you are sharing the sunlight.
* Planting potatoes is prohibited due to the vulnerability of the commercial potato industry to pests and diseases. *There is a separate area to grow perennial food crops and garlic. If interested, please inquire.
WATER USE:
* If possible, water with the hose nozzles in the early morning or early evening to reduce water loss from evaporation. Please use good watering technique. See ‘Watering Tips’ posted on the bulletin board.
* Lawn sprinklers and soaker hoses are not permitted.
* Do not leave the water hose unattended when turned on.
* Coil the hoses on the hose stands after use and turn off the water valve on the post.
WEEDING CONDITIONS:
* Keep your plot regularly weeded and tidy. Weeds compete with your plants for sunlight, nutrients, and water.
* Hoe when weeds are small and before they go to seed. When small they may be left on the ground to wilt.
* Weed all areas within your plot, including to the lawn edges and to your neighbour’s borders.
* Mulch can help reduce weeds and retain soil moisture.
* Place only plant material and soil in the compost bin labelled ‘This Year’.
* Place weeds with seeds or diseased plants in the marked garbage containers beside the compost bin.
* Do not use synthetic chemical weed control products. * Gardeners who don’t maintain their garden plot may forfeit their plot or not be given a plot the following year.
TOOLS:
* The garden tools and other items in the shed are for sharing among gardeners.
* Return tools and other items to the shed. Tools left on the ground are a hazard.
* Lock the shed door before leaving.
