Hillcrest's FOOD SHARING TABLE
One of 100 Such Tables in Canada Social justice, feeding the hungry,
and inclusion of the marginalized have always been central to the church's mission, while food is a particular passion for our congregations, many of whom are farmers or fishers themselves. Knowing that food prices are high now, especially with dry conditions and poor harvests, we felt called to do something to help with the problem of food insecurity in our community. |
We are hosting produce exchange days twice a week at the new picnic table outside Hillcrest.
Each Sunday 10 to 1 and Wednesday from 3 to 6, gardeners are invited to share any extra produce they may have. Vegetables, preserves, etc. can be left at the table for others to take home. Some will give, others will take something home, and many will choose to make a trade. Any produce collected through the week is gathered at the church office and set on the table at exchange hours. After each sharing day, any leftovers are delivered to the community fridge at Montague Christian Church. We also have a binder for sharing favourite recipes, postcards of welcome and spiritual nourishment, and a collection box for monetary donations to the Montague Food Bank. Many gardeners from our church and from the Hillcrest Community Garden have already started making food sharing a part of their weekly rhythm. Now we are hoping to engage the wider community in this project of hospitality and nourishment. And, of course, the table is also an ordinary picnic table, available for any to stop by and enjoy a shady spot to eat, chat, or relax! |
